PNG’s only professional Muay Thai fighter and champion, Lee “The Flash” Garap, will be challenging Thailand’s Rangsan Poonsang for the World Kickboxing Federation’s (WKBF) welterweight (64.6kg) world title in Port Moresby on August 1st, reports The National.
Garap, 30, who is currently the PNG champion after defeating Alfred Samuel earlier this year in the country’s first ever Muay Thai bout, has 90 fights under his belt but is a novice compared to Poonsang who has already totalled some 480 fights.
According to Garap’s manager, Jerry Sarufa, his fighter has been training for up to five hours a day and is seriously preparing for the title fight.
He also said the Garap is seeking financial support from business houses and the government to realise his dream of fighting for the world title.
Brisbane based, Bruce “The Preacher” MacFie will be helping Garap prepare for the title fight.
